In the Middle Ages this street was called "Candelwriteystrete", when it was the preserve of candle and wick producers. In the vicinity are the Chandlers' and Furriers' Halls (livery companies). Displayed in the wall of the Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation at n°111, the London Stone is a slab of limestone which formed part of an altar supposedly erected by Brutus the Trojan, legendary discoverer of the British Isles around 800 BC.
