The heavily fortified city of Avallon was, in medieval times, one of the gateways to Burgundy. From this period, it has retained many features which you will discover as you walk round the ramparts. It is best to start from the bastion of the Auxerre gate. After following rue Fontaine-Neuve, overlooked by the Vaudois Tower, you will first come across the bastions of the Côte Gally and of the Petite-Porte and then the Chapitre (1454), Gaujard, Escharguet and Beurdelaine (1404) towers. The stroll also offers a panoramic view of the Cousin Valley.
