To the north of Zagreb, this mainly wooded park reaches an altitude of 1,032m at Sljeme peak (access by cable car). Zagreb's inhabitants come here to hike over 70 waymarked paths and ski. Four kilometres away are the ruins of the impressive 13C Medvedgrad fortified town, destroyed by an earthquake in 1590. It houses the national altar, where a burning flame pays tribute to the Croatians who died during the Yugoslav War. Fine views of Zagreb below.
