This square is named after the church in its centre, whose varnished tiled roof is a landmark of the capital. The edifice was built by Venetian masters and was flanked in the 17C by a Baroque bell tower. The interior boasts fine Gothic vaults and a beautifully carved chancel, the work of Ivan Mesrovic. The square is also the soul and symbol of political life, since it is here that the Sabor (Parliament) sits, as do the government and other official bodies.
