Built in 1773 under Hamengkubuwono I, the Great Mosque or Mesjid Agung has maintained all of its original components. Closely linked to the kraton and its various ceremonies, the mosque comes under the direction of a city notable, the pangulu, who is generally selected by the residents of the kauman, the neighbouring Muslim district. A large portico bathed in light precedes the actual prayer room, whose floor is covered with Italian marble. The three-step tiled roof, characteristic of Javanese architecture, rests upon a magnificent framework composed of 36 teak pillars.
