The present home of the German National Theatre was erected in 1907 on the site of a 1779 Baroque building and partly rebuilt after the Second World War. It was here that Schiller's great plays were first staged - directed by Goethe - and that, in 1850, the first performance of Wagner's Lohengrin was given. Statues of Goethe and Schiller stand in front of the theatre.
