Convento de Santa Clara's monumental bulk rises up above the Ave. It was built in the 18C over a series of 14C religious buildings. The church is of the fortress type and was founded in 1318. It has retained its Gothic style and inside are the Renaissance tombs of the founders, Dom Afonso Sanches and Dona Teresa Martins, and their children.
