If Venice is shaped like a fish, Castello is its tail. Between Saint Mark's Square and the Scuola Dalmata di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni there are still a few picturesque canals, with their fair share of marble-clad churches and charming palazzi. A different atmosphere prevails in the "fin" - around the Arsenal - which is still the city's most working-class neighbourhood and largely ignored by the tourists. The Giardini Pubblici to the southeast bring a haven of greenery to the banks of the lagoon.
