The Museu Faller is dedicated to the festival of the fallas (torches), during which huge cardboard effigies, often with satirical intent, are burned, with prizes awarded to the most imaginative figures. The custom dates back to the Middle Ages and is said to be linked to the tradition of carpenters, who burned accumulated wood shavings on the feast day of St Joseph. The effigies (ninots) on display in the museum date from 1934 to the present day. The Fallas festival has been awarded Intangible Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO.
