Built in the 17C by the Ottomans who wanted their own mosque dedicated to their Hanefite rituals, the Sidi Youssef mosque was the first monument built with an octagonal-shaped minaret crowned by a circular balcony and a canopy, enabling the muezzin to perform his call to prayer without having to worry about rain! Also worthy of note are the minbar, built out of masonry not wood, and the high platform (sedda) reserved for readers of the Koran. The courtyard houses the tomb of the founder Youssef Dey, which confers a funerary air on the mosque.
