The 12C church of St Michael the Archangel was rebuilt in the early 19C, after being burnt down by kardzhali, hordes of Turkish brigands attracted by the opulence of the city. The half-buried edifice features a bulging roof covered with stone slabs from which emerges a graceful wooden pinnacle. Inside, note the iconostasis, elaborately carved by local artists (Papa Vitan Conjuv, Simeon and Vitan Kojuv) and the splendid Episcopal pulpit (commissioned by Pope Kolju Vitanov).
