The lavish town hall owes its name to the "capitouls" - public magistrates - who governed the city of Toulouse. They are symbolised on the gigantic façade, (mid-18C and 128m/420ft-long), by eight pink marble columns. Don't miss the famous Salle des Illustres hall dedicated to Toulouse's victories. The Duke of Montmorency, governor of the Languedoc, was executed in the Henry IV courtyard (17C) in 1632, by order of Louis XIII, for rebelling against the king.
