This temple was founded in the 7C by two fishermen who are said to have caught in their net a golden statue of Kannon that had been thrown into the River Sumida. The central building (17C) was largely destroyed by bombings in the Second World War. The current, renovated, building has a wide titanium roof. To the right of the main building is the Shinto shrine, Asakusa-jinja (1649). See the gestures of the believers facing the incense burners. In May comes the Sanja Matsuri, a very popular festival.
