National Museum of Western Art
De Groene Gids
De beoordeling van de Michelin Gids
The National Museum of Western Art, designed by Swiss architect Le Corbusier, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. It was opened in 1959 to house the collection of Matsukata Kojiro (1865-1950), a shipbuilding entrepreneur who became fantastically wealthy during the First World War. The investments he made in consultation with one of the most prominent art dealers of the 1920s, Frenchman Paul Durand-Ruel, came to form an exceptional collection of Impressionist art: sculptures by Rodin, paintings by Monet, Gauguin, Denis (Young Girl with Cockerel) and a magnificent Pietà by Gustave Moreau.
