In this large market that runs along the railway line you can buy anything from shoes to smoked herring. Its eclectic nature is explained by its black market origins, which, here as elsewhere, developed in the capital to serve the needs of a population that was left completely destitute at the end of the war. Peasants arrived with sweet potatoes, one of the few affordable foodstuffs, and made sweets to sell to passers-by. The street of confectioners was born: Ameya-yokocho became Ameyoko.
