Engelbourg castle, only accessible by a footpath, towers 100m/328ft above the town of Thann, commanding a splendid view of the church of Saint Thiébaut, Alsace plain and the Black Forest in the distance. These strange yet compelling ruins date from 1648 when Louis XIV ordered the destruction of the 13C fortress. When the keep partially collapsed, this circular section remained, explaining the local reference to a "Witch's Eye".
