Sanmachi is the best-preserved district of Takayama, in which you can admire its architectural heritage built by talented carpenters. The streets that run alongside the Miya River are lined in handsome old wooden houses. Many have now been transformed into museums and antiques, lacquerware or craft shops. There is no lack of sake breweries and visitors are always welcome to drop in for a tasting. Don't miss Kusakabe House and Yoshijima House, both fine examples of traditional Takayama architecture.
