Built after the flood, this theatre is particularly beautiful when illuminated at night and has been used as the backdrop for numerous films. Neo-Baroque in style and inaugurated in 1883, it was built by Ferdinand Felner and Hermann Helmer, two architects from Vienna. The semi-circular façade is adorned with statues, notably those of József Katona and Ferenc Erkel. The interior, also Baroque in style, is decorated with frescoes by Zsigmond Vajda. The theatre is used for performances of opera, dance and theatre.
