Sunderland's prosperity at the turn of the 20C, coupled with the growth in shipbuilding, led to urban development and the creation of new suburbs such as Roker. St Andrew's Church, an extraordinary example of modern religious architecture was built during this period. Its interior is an expressionist interpretation of the Gothic style, embellished with superb decorative features and furnishings created by the leading names in the 19C arts and crafts movement.
