A sensation of power emanates from this fortress perched on a hill, in the heart of the Shumen Plateau Nature Park. The view over the town is quite matchless from here and the visit also offers the opportunity of a pleasant stroll through varied countryside, in particular along a path leading to the monument dedicated to the founders of the Bulgarian state. The most energetic can walk up to the monument from the town, climbing 1,300 steps (to the right of the History Museum).
