A full-scale outdoor museum, the Gamla Stan ("old town") is a paradise for pedestrians, with streets lined by old Hanseatic houses so close together they almost touch. Along its three main thoroughfares, Stora Nygatan, Österlånggatan and particularly Västerlånggatan, you'll find rather touristy places. Wander into the maze of quieter little lanes in the eastern part and bear in mind that the emblematic restaurants of the revival of Nordic cuisine are in this area.
