Located in the heart of Stortorget, the old town, the "Main Square" is the highest point of the island. In the Middle Ages, the bustling market place and stocks were here; it was also the setting for the tragic "blood bath" of 1520 when numerous heads were cut off here by order of the Danish King Christian II. The highlight of the square are its elegant 17C and 18C façades and its lively café terraces. In December, visitors can enjoy a glass of mulled wine as they stroll around the Christmas Fair which is held on the square.
