St-Tropez citadel has watched over the town to the east, with its splendid keep and three round towers dating from the 16C. The ramparts, partly hidden by majestic umbrella pines, played an important military role right up to the Second World War and now offer visitors stunning views of St-Tropez and its bay, Ste-Maxime, and the Maures and Esterel mountains. It is now the Maritime History Museum, charting the port's history, the third largest of France in the 18C!
