Les Halles St-Pierre-sur-Dives, the covered market where one of the largest markets in Normandy is held on Monday mornings, is quite beautiful. Destroyed by fire in 1944, it was entirely and faithfully rebuilt. The oak timber frame is held together with 290 000 chestnut dowels. You won't find a nail here, or a bolt: even the roof tiles are fixed by hand-made dowels! If the tiles were to be piled on top of each other, they would reach the top of the Puy de Dôme (1 465m).
