This castle stands on an isolated rocky ledge and looms over the Savoie coombe. The Miolans family occupied it from 923 to 1523, after which the dukes of Savoie inherited the property using it as a state prison between 1559 and 1792 (Marquis de Sade imprisoned here in 1722). The terrace affords a fine view of the Savoie coombe and the Maurienne outlet. St Peter's Tower offers a splendid panorama of Mont Blanc. After visiting the keep, do not miss the underground defences.
