To gain a better insight into the extent of the devastation caused in 1902, head for the Centre district and the Frank A.-Perret Volcanic Museum, which charts the eruption step by step. The deliberately conserved ruins dotted around the streets also paint a striking picture, occasionally revealing the beauty of the initial building, such as the ruins of the late-18C theatre (Rue Victor-Hugo). Nearby, the cell, which saved Louis-Auguste Cyparis' life, one of the two sole survivors of the disaster, can be seen in the prison ruins.
