Elizabeth Castle has enjoyed a chequered history: fortified from 1550, it was the residence of the governor Sir Walter Raleigh, refuge of the future Charles II, bombed in 1651 by the Parliamentarians and used by the Germans during the Occupation. Today it houses the Militia Museum, which features a collection of military memorabilia. In the former governor's house, wax figures bring the castle's history to life. From the keep, there is a fine view over St Aubin's Bay.
