Thought to have been built around the year 298, Diocletian's palace, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, occupies a huge quadrilateral area which is 180m wide and 215m long. Its style was typical of Roman villas of the time, a successful combination of stone, marble and brick with tiled rooftops. A path around the ramparts and 16 defensive towers complete the site. The palace was transformed into houses in the Middle Ages, and is now thought to be home to around 900 apartments.
