The picturesque town of Spello, situated 13km south of Assisi, is huddled around Santa Maria Maggiore church (11C-12C). On the left transept, the Baglioni Chapel still boasts the finest frescoes by Bernardino di Betto, also known as Pinturicchio, depicting the Annunciation, the Birth of Jesus and Preaching in the Temple (wall), as well as the sibyls (vault). On either side of the high altar there are frescoes by Il Perugino. Note also the Deruta majolica paving.
