Established in the crypt of the cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky, this section of the National Art Gallery is devoted to icons and presents an exceptional collection of religious art dating from the 12C to the 19C. The most interesting items include a 12C St Nicholas, the altar doors of Boboshevo Monastery (1488) and an outstanding carved iconostasis, originally in the church of the Intercession of Rila Monastery (19C). Also of interest are the murals of the church of Nesebar's St George and the section which charts the evolution of icon painters during the period of the National Revival.
