Designed in 1898 as an alternative to the dangerous crossing of the White and Chilkoot passes, this narrow-gauge railroad bears witness to the ingenuity and perseverance of the pioneers. It originally linked Skagway to Whitehorse and operated from 1900 to 1982. Since 1988, the refurbished railroad cars operate as a tourist attraction and the 32km/20mi journey, which rises to an altitude of 873m/2,865ft, provides views of Skagway and the rugged peaks dominating the town.
