This 1.5km-long island, managed for its salt marshes up until 1934, possessed little more than the fort of St Pierre and St Cécile castle when Paul Ricard (1909-1997) bought it in 1958. The Marseille magnate turned it into a family theme park in a setting of pine forest, vineyards and scrubland. To get the full measure of the diversity of Embiez island, follow the coastal path (7km, 1hr30mins) and pay a visit to the Paul-Ricard oceanographic institute.
