The Donon range (alt. 1,009m) lies between St-Dié-des-Vosges and Saverne, in the heart of the sandstone Vosges. Whichever side you approach from, you will recognise the outline of this two-tiered summit that marks the border between Alsace and Lorraine. Thickly covered with silver fir and spruce trees, Mt Donon is also the source of numerous streams. It used to be considered a sacred mountain, as is in evidence at its summit, where traces of religious ceremonies date back to Celtic and Gallo-Roman times.
