The most impressive building in Sarajevo was built by Alexander Wittek in the late 19C in inadulterated neo-Moorish style, inspired by Granada's Alhambra and the architecture of Cairo. The building was first the seat of the town hall, then parliament, before being repurposed as a university library, containing between 2 and 3 million books. The building and its collections were destroyed in a fire that resulted from bombing in 1992, during the war. It has since been restored.
