On the road from Dupnica to Samokov is the ancient Thracian village of Sapareva Banja, renowned as the birthplace of the Byzantine general Belisarius. It has numerous thermal springs, with water pouring out of the ground at temperatures ranging from 57 to 103° (a European record), a phenomenon that draws walkers. In the municipal park is a geyser (unique in the Balkans), which spurts an 18m-high jet of water every 20 seconds. As night falls, the play of light on it makes for a surreal display.
