Inaugurated in 1954 on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of São Paulo, the Parque do Ibirapuera is the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer and landscape architect Burle Marx. They may not have a beach like Copacabana, but here the Paulistas have an enormous open space devoted to culture, sport and the body beautiful. Every weekend nearly 400 000 visitors vie for space to cycle, jog, roller-skate, skateboard, fly kites, have a picnic or listen to concerts (Praça da Paz).
