De beoordeling van de Michelin Gids
This monastery, given the highest title in Orthodox monasticism of lavra, was a tribute by Peter the Great to Prince Alexander Nevsky, who defeated the Swedes on this spot in 1240. Building of the magnificent ensemble started in 1710 but was only completed well after the tsar's death and is composed of 11 churches and 4 cemeteries. Today it is a genuine open-air museum and a pantheon of Russian culture.
