This former summer residence was built from 1613 to 1616, in the style of the Italian villas of the Veneto, by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Mark Sittich. The virtuosity of the trompe-l'oeils in the Ballroom, the Octagon and the music room, as well as the water features in the gardens might prove more of a surprise than you are expecting. From caves to fountains, you head to the Mechanical Theatre, where 113 figures come to life animated by water power. There is a zoo with vast enclosures just next door.
