Empéri refers to the Germanic Holy Roman Empire, fief of the archbishops of Arles, lords of Salon, and its territory. Several sovereigns stayed in this residence, the construction of which spanned the 10C to 13C; a Renaissance gallery was added in the 16C. The Chapelle St Catherine, the ceremonial hall and some 30 rooms are now home to the Musée de l'Empéri, a museum of art and military history.
