The third of Oregon's three capitol buildings (fire claimed the first two) this 1938 Greek Revival edifice, designed by New York architect Francis Keally, houses the Legislature, the Governor, the Secretary of State and the State Treasurer. A 23ft bronze and gold-leaf statue of a pioneer stands atop the capitol. Other artworks scattered about the building also recall the state's history, including the massive Vermont marble sculptures of a covered wagon and of Lewis and Clark being guided by Sacajawea that flank the main entrance. Stand near the large replica of the Oregon state seal in the center of the rotunda and you can look up 106ft to the ceiling of the capitol dome, painted with murals.
