Until 1843, this double-bayed arch stood on the main bridge. When the bridge, also of Roman origin, was demolished, it seemed likely the arch would be next. Fortunately, Prosper Mérimée kept an eye on it and it was decided to dismantle this votive arch, built in the year 18 or 19 and dedicated to Tiberius's adopted son, Germanicus, his son Drusus and Tiberius himself, and rebuild it on the right bank of the Charente River.
