Lot's shrine is said to stand on the site where Lot and his daughters sought refuge after the destruction of Sodom. The Bible describes the cataclysm that befell the city as a punishment God wrought upon its morally corrupt people. It originally comprised a church with mosaic flooring, living quarters and funerary chambers. The cave behind the church has also yielded objects dating back to 3 000 BC.
