The Palazzo Ducale, built in 1559, boasts rich coffered wooden ceilings inspired by the Spanish style and a painted decor, some of which is by Bernardino Campi. In the huge Sala delle Aquile la Cavalcata, note the ten wooden life-size equestrian statues which celebrate the military virtues of the Gonzaga family. In the centre, Vespasiano Gonzaga can be seen wearing the necklace of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
