Sixtus V (1585-90) was a builder pope who transformed Rome as never before since the Empire. He wanted to link the main basilicas by wide and straight roads, so initiated the construction of four straight avenues that meet at these crossroads. From here, there are views to Porta Pia, as well as the three obelisks at Trinità dei Monti, Piazza dell'Esquilino and Piazza del Quirinale. Four fountains (16C) were erected at the cut-off corners of the junction.
