When the old forum became too small to hold the Assemblies of the People, the judicial hearings, the conduct of public affairs and commercial matters, Caesar began the construction of a new forum to the north of the old one; Augustus, Trajan, Nerva and Vespasian all subsequently did the same. The Imperial Fora formed a monumental expression of Imperial prestige. In 1932, the Fora were divided into two sections with the construction of the Via dei Fori Imperiali by Mussolini. The interesting Museo dei Fori Imperiali is well worth a visit before continuing into the ruins themselves.
