Laid out in 1760 according to the plans of Jean-Gabriel Legendre (the architect of the Intendance building in Châlons), this square is typical of the Louis XVI period with its arcades and balustraded roofs. On its south side, the former Hôtel des Fermes is now home to the sub-prefecture. With the exception of the pedestal, the statue of Louis XV by Pigalle did not survive the Revolution. The one displayed today, by Cartellier, was added at the time of the restoration of the monarchy.
