Along with São José and Santo Antônio, Recife Antigo is one of the three islands that make up the centre of Recife. In the 1990s, the city council took charge of the rehabilitation of the area. The programme includes salvaging a series of historical constructions, whose narrow, colourful façades with high windows bear the distinctive mark of Dutch architecture. A shopping centre and occasional events (on Arsenal da Marinha Square and Marco Zero Square) are bringing Recifenses back to this port area.
