The museum was originally conceived of to encourage the production of quality decorative artwork; thanks to a series of donations and acquisitions, it has gone on to become one of the most comprehensive of its kind in Central Europe, giving an exhaustive overview of the applied arts from Late Antiquity to the 20C. The emphasis is on Czech work, but foreign, in particular French and Italian, pieces also feature.
