Impressive volcanic phenomena persist at this crater: fumaroles of sulphur dioxide giving off strong smells and yellow deposits, miniature volcanoes spitting mud, jets of boiling sand, hot ground that sounds hollow when tapped. Solfatara is the most active area of the Phlegraean Fields.
