Portland is the only major city in the continental US that has an extinct volcano within its borders. Mt. Tabor, one of the few "highland" areas in East Portland, ranks as the youngest of the hundreds of volcanoes that erupted in the foothills of Mt. Hood eons ago. Southeast Salmon Street leads up through a residential section to the large forested park that crowns the summit of the ancient cinder cone. From the reservoir on the west slope, visitors obtain expansive viewsa of downtown Portland and the West Hills; walking paths and a series of stairways ascend to a grassy area on top where the jagged buttes and mounded hills formed by earlier volcanic activity can be seen to the east.
